The Heisman Trophy will be awarded Saturday night. Here are the last two Heisman winners who played for military academies: Roger Staubach and Pete Dawkins. One is from Ohio, the other is from Michigan.
Roger Staubach was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Purcell Marian High School, graduating in 1960. Staubach won the 1963 Heisman Trophy playing for the U.S. Naval Academy. He went on to a Hall of Fame career for the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL after his military service. He led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl victories and was named MVP of Super Bowl VI. Pete Dawkins was born in Royal Oak, Michigan and attended Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He was accepted for admission to Yale, but chose to go to West Point, instead. Dawkins was the 1958 winner of the Heisman Trophy while playing for the Army at the U.S. Military Academy. Dawkins continued to serve the country in a long, distinguished military career. He earned two Bronze Stars for Valor during action in Vietnam, and eventually attained the rank of Brigadier General before retiring in 1983. |
