June 15, 1864 Arlington National Cemetery
On June 15, 1864 Arlington National Cemetery was established by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton and Brigadier General Montgomery C. Meigs. They set aside acreage and arranged for the proper burial of 1800 casualties from the Battle of Bull Run.
